The Summer of BOBA!
This summer at our house has been the summer of Bubble Tea! If you have been to a mall lately, you have probably seen bubble tea kiosks “popping” up everywhere. What is the strange drink that you drink and chew at the same time?
Bubble tea originated in Taiwan and is sweeping across America as we get a taste of this fun, sweet drink. Bubble teas contain a tea of some kind, flavors of milk, and sugar. Add ins, known as “pearls” can be chewy tapioca, popping boba, fruit jelly, grass jelly, agar jelly, and puddings. Let’s just say- if you go to a bubble tea store, you are likely to get overwhelmed by the menu! There will be dozens of tea flavors, black or green tea choices, milk choices, sugar levels, and flavors and types of pearls. The Skipper girls keep it simple, choosing flavors and pearls that we are familiar with!
When you receive your bubble tea, it will come with an extra wide straw because you will be sucking up pearls in your straw along with your drink. Then you will chew and drink at the same time. Sounds a little like walking and chewing gum! It is different for sure, but a fun treat and it is actually delicious. Who doesn’t like fruit and tea??
My girls discovered bubble tea recently and it has been a connecting point for us this summer. First it was us trying to find places that sold it when we were out doing “girl things”. Then it developed into something we make together at home. It is a hit! The whole family loves it and has been a fun summer treat for us. We are a fan of the popping boba which are little flavor filled balls that pop in your mouth. These come in all kinds of fruity flavors. I have tried the tapioca pearls and personally am not a fan. They are much more chewy and a little too rubbery for me. My sister in law and other friends love them though, so I would say, ask for a sample first! 😉
With four children, even going out for treats like bubble tea add up quickly! Bubble tea will cost you about $5 each at a store or kiosk. I decided I would try to find this boba and make our own homemade version. I ordered 3 containers of boba from amazon for $21.00 and a pack of reusable straws for $5.99. We kept a tally of how many cups of bubble tea we made with these and it ended up being 25 cups of tea! Including the price of Simply Lemonade and tea, it ended up being about $1.25 per cup. Love me a deal! I’ll include the links for the boba and straws we used and then tell you how we made it. The sky is the limit as far as flavors, so please share what you try and give us some new ideas!
Bubble Tea with Popping Boba
Instructions
- Choose tea that you want to use. Could be sweet tea, black tea, green tea, fruit tea. We like Arizona Green Tea.
- Add fruit juice or lemonade. Be as creative as you would like! We use Simply Lemonade, pineapple juice, or whatever is in the fridge at the time.
- Add some ice and choose the flavor of boba you want to use. Again, the sky is the limit on combinations! We use approximately 1/4 cup of boba per glass.
Notes
That’s it! So simple, sweet, and yummy! This is not a drink for you if you are watching the sugar- ha! It is something fun we share and enjoy together and with friends when they come over. It would be awesome for birthday parties, baby showers, or an evening on the back porch. Let me know how you like it!
